Bermuda Day 1 - July 5th

Today was an early day. Many of us had gotten up around 2 AM to get to the airport by 4. The majority of us arrived on time, so we were able to get our boarding passes and check our bags with little delay. The latecomers still had time to get theirs before we were all done. Then we moved on to TSA and waited at the airport for about an hour before boarding our first plane. It was a smaller plane and a full flight.

When we got to Newark Airport, we had a two-and-a-half-hour layover, so we set up a little base camp at our gate before we explored the airport and rested for the rest of the time. The second flight was longer and on a larger, much nicer plane, which was also full.

When we arrived in Bermuda, we spent what felt like hours waiting to get through customs. Once we made it through, we were shuttled to BIOS in two trips. We didn't even get settled in before we were on the move again, getting changed and hiking to our first dive spot of the trip, Whalebone Bay. We saw a large variety of fish species, from the common Sergeant Major to a large Moray Eel and a Porcupinefish.

We quickly rushed back to BIOS, making it back in about half the time it took us to get there. We got changed into dry clothes and hurried to make it to dinner and dessert on time.

We finished the day by submitting our fish abundance surveys on REEF and working on our journals. We finished everything by 8:30 and had the rest of the night to ourselves.
