Today was a long day spent on the boat. We were out on the water for about seven hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., visiting two different locations and snorkeling twice at each one. It was one of our longest field days so far and gave us plenty of time to observe the reefs and marine life.
After about 40 minutes, we arrived at our first dive site, Blue Hole. As soon as we got into the water, a group of students spotted a young turtle swimming nearby. During our 45-minute snorkel, we saw many of the common fish species that we have been identifying throughout the trip. On our way back to the boat, we also saw a few Barracuda. After everyone returned, the boat moved about 50 feet to another section of Blue Hole for our second dive. During this dive we saw more Barracuda and a large Black, Grouper before returning to the boat.
We had lunch while traveling to our second dive location, North Rock. The boat ride took about 30 minutes, giving everyone a chance to eat, drink some water, and rest before getting back into the water.
Our first snorkel at North Rock lasted about 45 minutes. We continued to see many of the common reef fish we had been seeing throughout the week, along with a small Moray Eel hiding in the reef. As we returned to the boat, we spotted a squid underneath it before climbing back aboard.
For our fourth and final dive, the boat moved another 50 feet before we entered the water again. By this point in the day, most of us were starting to feel tired after spending so much time snorkeling. People returned to the boat at different times, with some finishing after about 30 minutes and others staying out for the full 45 minutes. On our way back, we saw a large school of small needlefish near the surface.
After returning to BIOS, everyone was ready to relax after spending most of the day on the water. Some people decide to take a short hike to see a Night-Blooming Cereus, a plant whose flowers only bloom for one night out of the month. Although we saw many of the same species we had become familiar with over the past few days, seeing the turtle, Black Grouper, squid, and several Barracuda made it another successful day of fieldwork.
